MySpace is a social networking site which allows you to create a unique profile, and communicate with your friends. You can upload your choice of videos, photos and music on to your profile and your friends can comment on them. It was my first experience with a social networking site, and it influenced the way I use technology today. It was because of MySpace that I rarely write letters or use my hotmail address. It is also why I hardly ever get photos developed anymore. However since the emerging of Facebook, myself and many people around the world no longer own a MySpace. It has become a thing of the past.
In 2009 MySpace announced that it was going to cut nearly 30% of its workforce, leaving it with just 1000 employees.
MySpace became the most popular social networking site in the United States in June 2006, a position that it held throughout 2007 until 2008. However by April 2008, MySpace was overtaken internationally by its main competitor, Facebook, based on monthly unique visitors. (World Mix News 2011) In April 2008, 73% of the total time spent on social networks was spent on MySpace, according to a recent Nielsen study. Social network users spent just 23% of their time on MySpace in April 2009, compared to nearly 66% for Facebook. (David Goldman 2009)
MySpace may have faded because it was targeted to a younger age range compared to Facebook which targets people at all ages. Many people around late 20’s early 30’s described MySpace to me, as too colourful and overwhelming. They described Facebook as less intimidating and easier to understand.
